Progress is never linear. I think we were completely brainwashed in school. I firmly believe that the default growth curve is exponential. The problem is that exponential curves look linear before they start picking up. And in the real world there is a lot of up and downs along the way as well. It's never smooth. So exponential with a lot of ups and downs.
