March 25th, 2021 | Ai Weiwei
One of my favorite artists of all time is Ai Weiwei. He is a Chinese artist and activist. Was prisoned in China for his art. And was kicked out of the country. I remember finding out about him by accident, in 2015. I was in London to visit my family, and my sister happened to recommend an art exhibition of his. I normally hate art galleries. But, for some reason, I went. And I remember being completely blown away by it. A few years later, I was with my younger brother at an ophthalmologist's office. The queue was long, so I went through the magazines and started reading. One of them caught my eye. The cover showed refugees that landed on the Greek shores from the Middle East. Inside, I found an interview with Ai Weiwei. I had completely forgotten about him. Apparently, he is very much involved with the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean. During his interview, he talks about Twitter. Since he is censored throughout China and the mainstream media, it's what he uses to get his word out. He called Twitter "ART" in that interview. I remember eye-rolling a little. I hate when people throw away the word "art" loosely. But if anyone has the credentials to talk about art, it's Ai Weiwei. Makes you wonder. Maybe we could learn a thing or two from Ai Weiwei and not treat our timelines like dog shit.
